Some scientific predictions for the future warn of the possibility of war and famine in the near future of humanity. A stressed climate, reduced and polluted natural resources will, if nothing changes, create a situation in which people, nations, will be reduced to scrape together the most meager survival.

What causes this possibility? Many people say there are too many people in this world. But that isn’t it.

We do not have enough resources on this planet to feed 10 billion people a meat-eating diet. However 10 billion people can be sustainably fed with a vegetarian diet. We would be able to manage it on much less land than we now use for agriculture.

Consider these massive wastages that we take for granted almost like human rights.

  • Typically, in ‘developed’ economies, 1/3rd of all food produced is wasted.
  • A vegetarian can live on food produced on 1/8th of the land that a meat eater needs.
  • In feeding animals, around 7/8ths of human-available nutrition is converted into wastage and pollution.
  • Directly as a result of wanting to eat meat (or believing we need to – but there’s not much excuse for that anymore!), around 30% of the ice free surface of the planet is wasted for grazing, rendering the land unusable and damaging the environment all around for generations to come.

These are typical calculations averaged from a variety of reputable scientific sources – links to many of these you will encounter on this site. What they tell us is that there is no population problem, there is a lifestyle problem – one that’s spreading all over the world, taking root in developing countries such as China, India and others.

We need to make peace on this planet and it depends entirely on our diet. Regardless of our tastes or beliefs, the only other option is the worsening of international relations.

Government leaders- economists- people with influence: before we look at the future in negative terms, please examine what we can change in order to completely avert the need for ‘planning for the worst’. Become part of a global revolution - one that will bring peace between nations. Go vegetarian or vegan, promote it as a solution to the problems of today and the worsening prospects of tomorrow!
